What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a skin condition that affects in the region of one in fifty adults while at the same time causing significant psychological distress to those individuals that are afflicted with the condition. One of the most interesting discoveries related to what causes psoriasis skin disease is that its onset is rooted in the body’s immune system.

Salmon colored skin which becomes scaly, flaky and irritated is among the common symptoms of psoriasis. With plaque psoriasis, which is also the most common type, the affected areas develop circular, eliptical or odd shaped areas of red which are covered with skin that is scaly and silver colored. There is no consistency in the size or form of the patchy areas and sometimes, individual smaller patches can merge together and appear as one large odd shape of irritated skin. As well as being unsightly, the skin in these areas sometimes cracks and starts bleeding.

Caring For Your Dry SkinThe first step in caring for your dry skin is to recognize the symptoms.  Signs of dry skin may be:

* Your skin has a dull appearance
* Your skin feels tight and uncomfortable when washed
* Your complexion is rough instead of smooth
* Your skin tends to flake and peel
* Your skin feels itchy, sometimes to the point of sleep disturbances
* Your skin looks dehydrated or shrunken in appearance

Normal skin is renewed, that is the outer skin is shed and replaced approximately every 30 days.  Excessive flaking of the skin or exfoliation of skin layers through over cleansing removes the protective top skin layer that is responsible for helping your skin retain moisture.  It is a lacking in the ability of the skin to retain moisture that results in dry skin.

What Is Adult Acne?Just what is Adult Acne and why does this condition which is usually associated with the hormonal upheaval of the teenage years suddenly come back to haunt us in later life?

There are basically two types of Adult Acne.  The first is Persistent Acne, which begins in the teenage years and for some reason never goes away.  Instead it continues on into adulthood.  The second is Late Onset Acne.  Late Onset Acne can happen to those that have been free of acne for many years and even to some that have never had a problem with acne before.

The problem that results in Adult Acne occurs when bacteria, skin cells and excess Sebum accumulate in the hair follicles under the skin’s surface.  According to Wikipedia.org, Sebum is produced by microscopic Sebaceous glands in your skin and is used primarily as a lubricant for hair and skin.

Statistically, 25% of adult males and 50% of adult females are plagued with Adult Acne.  Recurrence can occur at anytime from the 20s to 40s and well beyond.  No matter what age it shows up, Adult Acne is an unwanted visitor.

Caring For Combination SkinBefore you are able to care for combination skin, you need to know that you indeed do have this skin type.  Combination skin usually refers to facial skin.  Most of us work with either dry or oily skin.  With combination skin, both dry and oily skin is present on the face.  The T-Zone, which represents the forehead, nose and chin, is generally where you will find oily skin.  The balance of the face will have dry or normal skin.

A simple test for combination skin is to lightly blot the T-Zone area with a tissue.  If the tissue comes away with oily residue in the T-Zone area, but not on the other areas of your face, you have combination skin.

Amongst the challenges folks with combination skin face are a tendency toward acne, as well as whiteheads and blackheads in the oily areas.  At the same time, the dry areas may appear dry and flaky.  Your face feels tight when washed and takes on a waxy look in the T-Zone area as the day progresses.  Over time, combination skin may become very sensitive, reacting when exposed to the sun or even a new skin care routine or product.  If you suffer from allergies, these can add to the problem.  Combination skin also tends to tan unevenly, leaving uneven skin tones.
