Barriers to Personal ChangeSome of the barriers to personal change include being overwhelmed, time management, undefined goals, and mindset. Today we will look at how overwhelming goals can act as barriers to personal change.

Often if you focus on everything that needs to be done to reach a goal, you find yourself feeling overwhelmed. Being overwhelmed leads to self-doubt and procrastination. Self-doubt and procrastination act as barriers to personal change. To move past those barriers you need to reduce your focus to a more manageable size.

Once you have identified a goal you would like to achieve, the next step that must be taken is identify the steps that you need to take to reach your goal. This gives you a guide to follow. After you have broken down the steps, go over them once again and break them down even further until you have the smallest bits that are possible. After all, most of us cut our food into bite size pieces do we not? Yet we still manage to eat a meal. In fact, by reducing steps to their smallest size, and focusing on just that single step, you reduce the likelihood of that step not being done and becoming one of your barriers to personal change.

Focus on proceeding step-by-step. Do not move on to the next step until each step is completed. Another reason goals end up being barriers to personal change is proceeding to quickly before a step is completed or skipping steps. How many have heard the expression that the longest distance between two points is the shortcut? Skipping steps generally means going back to complete what was skipped.

Take time to reward yourself as each step is completed. Congratulate yourself for not allowing that step to hold you back and become one of your barriers to personal change. Then move on to the next step. Continue this process until you reach your goal.

Follow the same process for each task in your list of steps until each is successfully completed. By taking it one at a time you build on each subsequent success rather than being overwhelmed, and in the process build your faith in your ability to over come the barriers to personal change that exist in your life.
