Elements Of Astrology

There are four groups of elements in the Zodiac signs. The Elements of Astrology, fire, air, water and earth, are representative of the elements required for life and determine the base character of a particular group while Qualities indicates the manner in which their character is expressed.

The association of the Zodiac signs and the four elements dates back to the 2nd Century AD when Ptolemy assigned three Zodiac signs to each element.

The Zodiac signs associated with the Fire element of astrology are Aries (March 21 to April 19), Leo (July 23 to August 22) and Sagittarius (November 22 to December 21). The fire elements are most compatible with air elements because fire requires air to exist. They are least compatible with water elements, which may dampen their spirited ways. People born under the fire sign have dynamic leadership qualities. Other qualities included are active, outgoing, instinctual, spirit, inspired and energetic.

The Zodiac signs associated with the Air element of astrology are Aquarius (January 20 to February 18), Gemini (May 21 to June 21) and Libra (September 23 to October 22). Air elements are most compatible with Fire signs. People born under the Air sign are inspirational and idea people. They need room to move and freedom to think. Other qualities include ideas, detached, social, intellectual, and conceptual.

The Zodiac signs associated with the Water element of astrology are Cancer (June 22 to July 22), Scorpio (October 23 to November 21) and Pisces (February 19 to March 22). Water signs are most compatible with Earth signs. People born under the Water sign are emotional, sensitive beings with secret depths. They tend toward deep thoughts and will often hide their emotions if they do not feel safe. Other qualities include introverted, imaginative, emotions, and nurturing.

The Zodiac signs associated with the Earth element of astrology are Taurus (April 20 to May 20), Virgo (August 23 to September 22) and Capricorn (December 22 to January 19). Earth signs are most compatible with Water signs that nurture them. Earth signs can appear to be rigid, and are assigned the qualities of stable and consistent. Other qualities include practical, grounded, the body and sensual.

While the birth date determines the primary element, people have a mix of elements in their astrological chart. If all four elements were present in their astrological mix, it would indicate that the person is a more rounded individual. A lack of one or more elements will cause a lack of grounding in the particular qualities related to the missing element(s). So while the primary element is important, it is equally important to know the mix of the remaining three elements of astrology, which help to balance things out.
